And that’s the exact opposite of what an emotionally intelligent person would do.

They would acknowledge the other person’s feelings, express understanding, and work collaboratively towards a resolution.

2) “You’re overreacting”

Now here’s a phrase that’s a personal pet peeve of mine – “You’re overreacting”.

I remember a time when I was having a rough day, and I shared my feelings with a friend. Instead of providing comfort or understanding, they simply told me I was overreacting.

That moment still stings.

Telling someone they’re overreacting is another sign of low emotional intelligence. It’s essentially telling them that their feelings are invalid or exaggerated.

Instead of understanding and empathizing with the other person’s feelings, it minimizes their experience and shuts down the conversation.

It can also lead to the other person feeling isolated, misunderstood, and unsupported.

3) “I told you so”

“I told you so” is a phrase that has the power to pour salt in the wound.

It’s used when someone wants to point out that they were right, often when the other person is already feeling low due to a mistake or failure.

Interestingly, psychology suggests that saying “I told you so” gives a temporary feeling of superiority, but it’s detrimental to relationships in the long run.

When someone uses this phrase, it indicates they are more focused on being right than understanding and empathizing with the other person’s situation.

This lack of empathy and consideration for others’ feelings is a classic sign of low emotional intelligence.

An emotionally intelligent person would instead offer support, understanding, and constructive advice for the future rather than dwelling on past mistakes.

4) “It’s not my problem”

One phrase that speaks volumes about a person’s emotional intelligence is “It’s not my problem”.

When you’re having a conversation and someone throws this phrase into the mix, it shows a lack of empathy and an unwillingness to help or even understand.

This phrase effectively builds a wall, isolating the speaker from the other person’s situation.

This phrase is a clear indication of emotional disconnection.

Instead of engaging in dialogue, it sidesteps the issues and avoids meaningful conversation.

Emotionally intelligent individuals strive to keep communication open, respectful, and meaningful.

They listen to understand, not simply to respond and that’s why “whatever” is not part of their vocabulary.

6) “That’s just how I am”

A common phrase that often masks a lack of emotional intelligence is “That’s just how I am”.

This phrase is often used as a defense mechanism to avoid taking responsibility for one’s actions or behaviors.

It’s a way of saying, “I won’t change” or “I won’t consider your feelings or perspective”.

An emotionally intelligent person understands the impact of their actions on others and is willing to adapt and grow.

They recognize their shortcomings and strive to learn and improve.

So when someone says, “That’s just how I am” in a conversation, it can be seen as a red flag.

7) “It’s just a joke”

The phrase “It’s just a joke” can be the most damaging of all when it comes to emotional intelligence.

Used as a cover-up, it allows the speaker to avoid responsibility for hurtful remarks or inappropriate behavior.

Instead of understanding and addressing the hurt they’ve caused, they invalidate the other person’s feelings.

An emotionally intelligent person understands that humor should never come at the expense of someone’s feelings.

They respect boundaries and are careful with their words.

If someone resorts to saying “It’s just a joke” after causing offense or distress, it’s an undeniable sign of low emotional intelligence.
