Being single is often misconstrued as loneliness or a lack of fulfillment.
However, this couldn’t be further from the truth for a sizable group of people.
For these individuals, being single is not a phase to rush through, but a life choice that brings joy and satisfaction. It’s about embracing personal freedom, independence, and the space to pursue their own interests and passions.
People who are perfectly content being single possess certain special traits. They view their solo status not as a deficiency but as an opportunity for growth, creativity, and self-discovery.
Let’s delve into these unique characteristics that set apart those who thrive in their singleness.
1) Embracing solitude
There’s a profound difference between loneliness and solitude. While the former is associated with a sense of isolation and sadness, the latter signifies peace, self-reflection, and contentment.
Those who are perfectly content being single understand this distinction and have taken to heart the beauty of solitude . They appreciate their own company and see it as an avenue to nurture their creativity, explore their interests, and practice self-awareness.
Being alone isn’t seen as a negative state to be avoided but an empowering space for personal growth. It provides them with the freedom to set their own pace, make their decisions, and shape their lives according to their values.
In essence, they have a strong relationship with themselves based on self-love and self-care. This trait gives them a sense of fulfillment that isn’t dependent on another person. And that’s an empowering place to be.
2) Prioritizing personal growth
A significant trait of those happily single is their unwavering commitment to personal growth. They understand that life is a journey of self-improvement and self-discovery. Instead of focusing on finding a partner to complete them, they put energy into becoming the best version of themselves.
This pursuit isn’t about attaining perfection but about embracing the process of continual learning. They read, explore, innovate, challenge their beliefs, and step outside their comfort zones. They are not afraid to confront their fears or weaknesses. Instead, they view them as opportunities for growth and learning.
I can personally relate to this as I’ve always believed in the transformative power of self-awareness and personal growth. It’s an ongoing journey that requires patience, resilience, and introspection.
As the renowned psychologist Carl Rogers once said: “The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination.” This quote encapsulates the essence of this trait perfectly.
Those content being single embrace this mantra, seeing life as an enriching journey where the focus is on the process rather than rushing towards a particular destination or societal milestone.
3) Self-sufficient in their happiness
One of the most significant attributes of those who are content being single is their ability to find happiness from within. They don’t rely on external factors, situations, or people to fuel their joy.
Instead, they cultivate a deep sense of fulfillment and satisfaction from their own achievements, passions, and personal growth.
In my video on “the illusion of happiness,” I delve into why chasing happiness externally often leads to disappointment. True contentment comes from within, by embracing life’s challenges, fostering meaningful relationships, and staying true to oneself.

Being single provides the space to explore this self-generated happiness more authentically. It allows individuals to understand what truly makes them happy, unfettered by the expectations or desires of others.

4) Taking responsibility for their own life
People who are content being single have one thing in common: They take full responsibility for their own life. They don’t blame others or circumstances for their situation. If they want something to change, they know it’s up to them to make it happen.
They understand that true empowerment comes from taking this responsibility. Instead of waiting for someone else to complete them or bring them happiness, they actively work on creating a fulfilling life for themselves.
This includes making hard decisions, facing challenges head-on, and taking steps towards personal growth.
It’s not always easy, and it doesn’t mean they never feel lonely or wish for companionship. But they know that being in a relationship won’t automatically solve their problems or fill any voids in their life.
This clear-eyed realism allows them to focus on what truly matters – their own attitudes, actions, and responses. It’s a path to personal freedom and resilience that is as rewarding as it is challenging.
5) Choosing authentic relationships
Those who are content being single understand the profound importance of real, authentic relationships. They value quality over quantity and would rather have a few meaningful connections than numerous superficial ones.
They are not looking for a partner to simply fill a void or meet societal expectations, but for a genuine connection based on mutual respect, empathy, and shared values.
This is not to say they shun relationships altogether. On the contrary, they fully acknowledge the joy of shared experiences and the support that comes from being part of a community. However, they refuse to settle for relationships that do not align with their values or contribute positively to their growth.
In one of my videos, I reflect on my experience of being single in a big city and the importance of slowing down and focusing more on building authentic relationships.

The key here is authenticity; whether it’s friendships or romantic relationships, they believe in nurturing connections that encourage them to be themselves, inspire growth, and foster mutual respect.
This approach to relationships contributes significantly to their contentment with being single.
6) Viewing obstacles as opportunities
In a world that often equates being single with being incomplete or undesirable, those who are genuinely content in their singleness hold a different perspective. They view societal norms and pressures not as obstacles, but as opportunities for growth and self-definition.
This may seem counter to conventional wisdom, but it’s a mindset that allows them to reject external expectations and define their own path. They are not afraid of being judged or misunderstood. Instead, they see these challenges as catalysts for personal development, creativity, and resilience.
They understand that every challenge contains within it the seeds of creative possibility. By embracing setbacks, they learn more about themselves, refine their values, and build resilience. This outlook empowers them to live life on their own terms and find contentment in their singleness.
7) Living in alignment with their values
The final trait that sets apart those who find contentment in being single is their dedication to living in alignment with their values. They have taken the time to identify what they truly value in life, and they strive to make decisions and shape their life around these values.
Being single offers them the freedom and space to pursue these values without compromise or distraction. Whether it’s through their work, personal interests, or social engagements, they actively seek out opportunities to express and live out their values.
For instance, if they value creativity, they might choose to spend their time working on a personal project or learning a new skill.
If they value social justice, they might get involved in volunteer work or activism. The point is, they use their singleness as an opportunity to fully commit to their values and passions.
This commitment isn’t just about personal fulfillment. It’s also about contributing to something greater than themselves. They understand that by living in alignment with their values, they are not only enriching their own lives but also making a positive impact on the world around them.
Ultimately, this dedication to living authentically is what allows them to find profound contentment in being single. They are not defined by their relationship status but by the values they uphold and the life they choose to lead.
Embracing singleness as a path to self-discovery
Being single can be a powerful catalyst for self-discovery and personal development. It provides the space to question societal norms, to explore our own interests and values, and to define our own path towards fulfillment.
In the end, whether we choose to be single or in a relationship isn’t what defines us. What truly matters is how we choose to live our lives, how we relate to ourselves and others, and whether we stay true to our values.
