7 things every Christian should pray for before voting

Christians and elections

Election Day is here, and with so much at stake, taking time for prayer before casting your vote can make a world of difference.

As Christians, we want to approach this decision with a spirit of faith and wisdom, asking God to guide our hearts and minds.

Today, as we head to the polls, let’s focus on 7 key things to bring before God in prayer.  No matter what the day holds, trust me, these prayers can help center us in His purpose.

Let’s vote with intention, knowing we’ve sought God’s guidance in each choice we make.

The importance of prayer before voting

Voting is an act that carries significant weight. It has the power to shape societies, influence policies, and direct the course of nations.

For Christians, this responsibility is deeply intertwined with their faith.

Prayer is a powerful tool that Christians use to seek guidance from God, especially when making important decisions like voting. It’s a way of communicating with God, seeking His wisdom and discernment.

The Bible encourages believers to pray about everything (Philippians 4:6). And this includes the electoral process.

That’s why we, as Christians, need to invite God into this aspect of their lives. All of us should seek His guidance and align our choices with His will.

The eight prayers we’re about to explore are not just mere words recited in a moment of solitude. They are heartfelt pleas for wisdom, understanding, courage, and grace.

1. Praying for discernment

Let’s admit it: in the world of politics, it’s easy to get swept up in the tide of public opinion or be swayed by persuasive rhetoric.

But James 1:5 says:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

This verse highlights the importance of seeking God’s wisdom in all decisions, including voting.

When Christians pray for discernment, they’re asking God to help them see beyond the surface. They’re seeking His guidance to understand the policies, track records, and character of the candidates.

This prayer is not about asking God to endorse a specific party or candidate. Instead, it directs us to seek His wisdom and make an informed choice that aligns with biblical values and principles.

2. Praying for integrity

In a political climate where honesty can sometimes take a backseat, praying for integrity is more important than ever.

Proverbs 11:3 says: “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.”

How would you interpret this verse?

Because to me, it underscores the value of honesty and the perils of deceit.

When Christians pray for integrity, they’re asking God to bring forth truth in the electoral process. They’re seeking His intervention to expose any dishonesty or corruption that might be hidden.

Besides, praying for integrity helps Christians maintain their own moral compass in the midst of political storms. That’s what strengthens our commitment to truth and righteousness in every area of life, including voting.

3. Praying for courage

As we move forward, it’s crucial to pray for courage.

It may seem unexpected, but let me explain why this prayer is instrumental.

The political arena can often be dominated by popular opinion and societal pressure. Standing up for biblical values in such an environment can require immense bravery.

Joshua 1:9 encourages us:

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Here’s the deal:

When Christians pray for courage, they’re inviting God to embolden them to vote according to their convictions, even if it goes against the tide.

They ask for the resolve to remain steadfast in their beliefs and not be swayed by societal pressures.

This prayer reinforces the faith of believers in the face of adversity. It reminds us that God stands with us as we exercise our democratic rights anchored in biblical truths.

4. Praying for unity

Isn’t it true that elections can often breed division and discord?

This is where our next prayer comes into play – a prayer for unity.

John 17:21 records Jesus’ prayer for His followers:

“That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.”

When Christians pray for unity, they’re asking God to bring harmony among believers during election periods. They’re seeking His help to maintain the bond of peace, even amidst differing political opinions.

Still, this prayer doesn’t teach us uniformity of thought or suppressing healthy debate. Instead, it leads us to maintain love and respect towards fellow believers, despite political differences.

Praying for unity is a powerful act that reminds us all of our shared faith and purpose – to be representatives of God’s love and truth in the world.

Insight: Did you know that the early Christian church was known for its unity (Acts 4:32)? This serves as a powerful reminder of what we should strive for during election seasons.

5. Praying for God’s will to be done

The next prayer is a humble submission to God’s sovereignty – praying for His will to be done.

In the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:10), Jesus models how to pray, saying, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

When Christians pray for God’s will to be done, they’re acknowledging that God’s wisdom surpasses their own. They’re submitting their desires and preferences to God’s divine plan.

This prayer is about:

  • Trusting God’s wisdom and plans
  • Accepting the results, even if they’re not what we hoped for
  • Maintaining faith in God’s control over all things

Praying for God’s will reaffirms our faith and trust in Him. It realigns our hearts with Him, ensuring that our votes are not driven by personal agendas but by a desire to see His kingdom come on earth.

6. Praying for peace

Election seasons can be fraught with tension, uncertainty, and even hostility.

This is why our sixth prayer focuses on peace.

Jesus said in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

When we pray for peace, we’re seeking God’s divine calm amidst the political storm. We’re asking for His peace to guard our hearts and minds, enabling us to engage in political discourse with grace and love.

This prayer is a shield against anxiety, fear, and conflict that can arise during elections.

Praying for peace helps us maintain our spiritual equilibrium during election seasons. It ensures that we are not overwhelmed by the waves of political discourse but are anchored in the peace of Christ.

7. Praying for the welfare of the nation

Imagine the impact of all Christians praying earnestly for the welfare of their nation during elections.

This is our final prayer point – praying for the nation’s well-being.

Jeremiah 29:7 stresses, “Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”

When Christians pray for the welfare of their nation, they’re asking God to guide its leaders and bless its people. They’re seeking His intervention for economic stability, social justice, and peace.

Have you ever thought about how your vote can contribute to the well-being of your nation?

It’s a sobering responsibility, isn’t it?

Well, praying for the welfare of the nation is a powerful act that aligns our civic responsibilities with our spiritual commitments. It ensures that our vote is not just about personal gain but about contributing to a thriving society.

Summary: The intersection of faith and politics

The act of voting, for Christians, is an intersection where faith meets politics. It’s a space where personal beliefs have the potential to shape societal structures.

As followers of Jesus, we’re called to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-14), influencing our environments with the love, truth, and justice of Christ.

This includes how we participate in the electoral process.

As we cast our votes today, let’s carry these prayers with us, grounding our choices in faith and love.

This election may bring its share of challenges and emotions, but our confidence lies in knowing that God is present in every moment.

Let’s keep praying for our nation, our communities, and our leaders. And remember that our faith isn’t just in any outcome, but in the God who guides us through every season.
