Why practicing Christians donate more to charity: 6 surprising reasons

donate more to charity

The surprising truth is that practicing Christians tend to donate more to charity.

This isn’t a baseless claim but a fact backed by numerous reports and studies.

But why is this the case?

In this article, we’ll delve into the 6 astounding reasons behind this philanthropic trend prevalent among practicing Christians.

This exploration will reveal the multifaceted motivations rooted in their faith and spiritual practices that lead them to be more generous in their charitable giving.

Charitable inclination of practicing Christians

The act of giving is deeply ingrained in Christian faith and practice.

It’s a principle that’s repeatedly highlighted and encouraged in the Bible, often intertwined with teachings on love, compassion, and generosity.

Many are aware of the practice of tithing – giving one-tenth of one’s income to the church or charitable causes. However, this is just one aspect of the charitable inclination observed in practicing Christians.

The reasons behind their propensity to donate more to charity are multifaceted, reflecting a combination of spiritual beliefs, ethical values, and the influence of biblical teachings.

Christian generosity in the UK

A recently commissioned report by Christian charity Stewardship revealed an untapped potential for generosity among practicing Christians in the UK.

The research aimed to understand the disparity between the current and potential levels of Christian giving.

Interestingly, it found that some practicing UK Christians could potentially donate an average of £2,784 per year, significantly more than the current level.

The findings were based on a survey conducted among 4,056 Christian adults between 9 and 16 November 2023, along with data from 15 in-depth interviews.

The report indicated that Christians in the UK donate an average of £73 a month (£876 a year), equating to 3.2% of their income after tax. This generosity surpassed the national average by £8 per month.

Comparing giving rates

The giving rates between Christians and the general population show a clear distinction.

According to the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) UK Giving Report 2023, practicing Christians—those who attend church and read the Bible at least once a month—give on average £167 a month, or 6.3% of their income.

This amount is £102 more than the national average documented in CAF’s report.

7 reasons why Christians donate to charity

1. Belief in biblical teachings of stewardship

One of the most compelling reasons why practicing Christians give more to charity lies in the biblical teachings of stewardship.

According to this concept, Christians believe that everything they possess, including their wealth and resources, are not truly their own but are gifts from God.

In other words, they see themselves as stewards or caretakers of God’s blessings. This perspective encourages them to manage these resources responsibly and use them to further God’s kingdom on earth.

As the Bible states in 1 Peter 4:10:

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

This verse clearly articulates the Christian responsibility to use their resources for the benefit of others, which often translates into generous charitable giving.

2. Emphasis on love and compassion

Another core reason why practicing Christians donate more to charity is the significant emphasis that Christianity places on love and compassion, especially toward those in need.

In the Bible, there are numerous teachings urging followers to demonstrate their love for God through acts of kindness and generosity towards their fellow human beings.

For instance, in the Gospel of Matthew 25:35-40, Jesus commends those who feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and care for the sick, equating these acts of kindness to serving Him directly.

This strong focus on love and compassion creates a profound sense of responsibility among practicing Christians to help those less fortunate.

And what better way to express this than through charitable giving?

3. The influence of the Christian community

Let’s now consider an intriguing aspect, rarely discussed but equally significant – the influence of the Christian community.

This factor is less about specific biblical teachings and more about the collective culture and values nurtured within Christian communities.

In many churches and Christian groups, there is a culture of generosity that permeates their interactions.

Regularly, members witness acts of giving within their community, whether it’s tithing during church services, supporting community projects, or helping those in need within the congregation.

This culture of generosity becomes a norm that individuals are encouraged to emulate.

Moreover, many Christian communities actively engage in charitable projects as a collective group.

It’s not uncommon to see church-based food banks, fundraising events for various causes, or mission trips aimed at aiding underprivileged communities.

Being part of such an active and giving community can significantly influence individual behavior.

4. The transforming power of empathy

Have you ever pondered the power of empathy in shaping our actions?

This might not be an aspect we commonly associate with charitable giving, but for practicing Christians, it’s a significant factor.

Christian teachings continually urge believers to empathize with the struggles of others.

Verses like Hebrews 13:16, which says “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased,” reiterate the importance of empathizing with those less fortunate and sharing one’s resources as acts pleasing to God.

This strong emphasis on empathy often leads practicing Christians to be more attuned to the needs and struggles of others.

They feel the pain of those suffering from poverty, hunger, or injustice, and this empathy motivates them to act – to give generously, in an attempt to alleviate these hardships.

In essence, their heightened sense of empathy, nurtured by their faith, inspires them to donate more to charity.

5. The principle of tithing

Another substantial factor that contributes to practicing Christians donating more to charity is the principle of tithing.

Rooted in the Old Testament, tithing refers to giving a tenth of one’s income to the church or charitable causes.

While the practice varies among different Christian denominations, the principle of tithing encourages a habit of regular giving. Many Christians view it as a way to express gratitude to God for His blessings and provision.

Key elements that make tithing influential in charitable giving include:

  • Consistency: Regular giving, regardless of income fluctuations.
  • Proportionality: Giving a set percentage ensures fairness across different income levels.
  • Spiritual significance: Seen as an act of worship and obedience to God.

While tithing primarily supports church activities and projects, it often extends to various charitable causes as well.

Thus, the practice of tithing plays a significant role in the higher levels of charitable donations among practicing Christians.

6. The desire to witness positive change

Here’s a fact that’s straightforward but deeply impactful: practicing Christians donate more to charity because they genuinely desire to witness positive change in the world.

It’s not just about following biblical teachings or adhering to church principles.

At the heart of their charitable giving is a sincere wish to make a difference, to contribute towards a better, fairer world.

Christianity teaches its followers that faith should be active, not passive.

As stated in the Book of James 2:14-17, faith without action is dead. This belief propels Christians to actively participate in making a positive impact, often through charitable giving.

Whether it’s helping eradicate poverty, supporting education, or promoting social justice, their charitable donations are a tangible expression of their faith in action.

They believe that every donation, no matter how small, can contribute towards significant change.

What are the barriers to giving out more?

While the potential for increased giving exists, the report identifies two main barriers that prevent people from donating more: affordability and a lack of trust that donations will be used effectively.

Half of the survey’s respondents reported that they cannot afford to start giving or give more, indicating financial constraints as a key barrier.

Additionally, 20% expressed concerns about too much of any donation being spent on administration rather than benefiting the intended recipients.

A lack of confidence in how recipients spend donated money was cited by another 15% of respondents.

These findings underscore the need for transparency and careful financial management by churches and Christian charities to encourage increased generosity.

Final thoughts

It’s clear that charitable giving is deeply rooted in the practice and teachings of Christianity. It’s not merely about generosity; it’s a reflection of faith, obedience, compassion, and the desire to effect positive change.

For practicing Christians, charity becomes a way to express their love for God and humanity, to actively participate in God’s work on earth, and to live out their faith in a tangible way.

  • Are there opportunities to give more generously in your life?
  • Could you be more proactive in seeking out charitable causes to support?

As we reflect on these questions, let us remember the biblical call to “do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share” (1 Timothy 6:18).

Through our giving, we can make a significant difference in the world around us.
